Kassel

Kassel is one of those places that we might not have ended up if it weren't for the recommendation of a friend.

My mom's neighbor/long time family friend was in Kassel in the late 60s when he was stationed in Germany during Vietnam. He said that he saw a church that had been bombed during the war that had not been rebuilt, but had been kept as it was a monument.

Andre found what he thought was the church online, so away we went.

When we got to the church we discovered that this wasn't the church, so we headed back to the car. Andre decided to stop in the shade and try to look it up on his phone - and happened to stop in front of a Christian book store. I suggested that we ask inside, and that turned out to be a great help!

Turns out that the church was less than a block away. It is a protected building and the shell is now being used as the patio of an Italian restaurant.

Andre said that he thought it was sad that the shell was being used to the restaurant, but I think it is kind of cool in a moving forward with the future while still remembering the past kind of way.

After the church we headed to a beautiful castle that Christian found online.

On the hill, 1 football field and 500 steps above the castle is a GIANT monument to Hercules, which we planned to walk to. Walking up the hill to the castle made us realize that we are all exhausted, so we drove instead. The monument was closed for renovations, but the view was still amazing.
